The main reason for the reduction in production is El Niño caused drought, which adds up to farmers or switches to cassava;NOAA predicts that this round has a high probability of developing into a super El Niño. Driven by expectations of tightening supply, New York sugar futures surged more than 20% last month, the largest monthly gain since 2010. India's monsoon rainfall is not as good as in previous years. The International Sugar Organization predicts that there will be a supply gap of 260,000 tons in the global sugar market in the new crop season.
