Tamazu Radio reported on June 18, 2024 that due to government subsidies provided to two fuel supply companies, transportation companies in the capital city of Juba will begin to reduce transportation costs throughout the city.
Moussa Herbert, Operations Manager of South Sudan National Oil and Gas Company, stated that the South Sudanese government provides fuel subsidies to Pacific Oil Company and National Oil and Gas Company. At the gas stations under these two companies, gasoline and diesel prices are both 2,700 South Sudan pounds (0.9 US dollars) per liter, while the price for unsubsidized gas stations is 3,700 South Sudan pounds (1.2 US dollars) per liter.
Herbert stated that Juba has seven gas stations selling subsidized fuel. To avoid anyone reselling fuel on the black market, fuel is currently only sold to cars and motorcycles, not in canned or barrel form.
Clement, the manager of the Pacific Oil Gas Station in the suburbs of Jubaganbo, said that low oil prices have attracted many customers, leading to long queues at gas stations and a threefold increase in sales since Sunday afternoon. Motorcycle taxi driver Simon said that fuel subsidies will help him earn more profits, and he also plans to reduce passenger transportation costs.
