SunSirs: Expected Increase in Wheat and Rapeseed Planting Area in France in 2023
April 13 2023 10:21:22     On April 12th, foreign media reported that on Wednesday, the French Ministry of Agriculture released preliminary predictions for the planting area of spring crops. It is expected that the area of soft wheat and rapeseed will increase this year, while the area of spring barley will decrease.
France is the largest producer of agricultural products in the European Union and also the top producer of wheat. The French Ministry of Agriculture predicts that the planting area of soft wheat in France will be 4.77 million hectares in 2023, an increase of 1.7% year-on-year and stable compared to the average of the past five years. The estimated planting area of winter soft wheat is 4.75 million hectares, slightly lower than the 4.76 million hectares predicted in February.
The total area of rapeseed is estimated to be 1.34 million hectares, an increase of 9.3% from last year and 11.1% from the five-year average.
The French Ministry of Agriculture stated that considering the impact of the 2022 drought and crop prices, sowing options are favorable for winter crops such as soft wheat, barley, and rapeseed.
Last summer, France was hit by drought and heatwaves, causing losses to crops such as corn.
The estimated area of spring barley in 2023 is 488000 hectares, a year-on-year decrease of 14.2% and a decrease of 19.2% compared to the five-year average.
The total planting area of all barley in France is estimated to reach 1.82 million hectares, a decrease of 2.1% year-on-year. Among them, the winter barley area increased by 3.2% year-on-year, reaching 1.33 million hectares.
The French Ministry of Agriculture will release a preliminary forecast of corn planting area in May.
